Day 5: To Tweet or Not to Tweet?

Today, Jason showed us Google Reader as a premier means of harnessing a stream of educational content from blogs and other websites. Tomorrow, I will show you Twitter as a means of accomplishing much the same thing. Typically, people confront Twitter either with open arms and a good deal of caution and disbelief in its powers as a PLN tool. In an effort to sway any doubter a little :), I wanted to launch a preemptive strike on your caution and disbelief with these two artifacts found....on Twitter.

Below, you will find a presentation that I thought was great at dealing with Twitter frivolous uses and with its useful ones in an entertaining and informing way.

Also, please reference this blog post we discovered on Twitter that shares some enlightening examples of how many resources flood Twitter in any given day. Scott McLeod's blog post shares one day only a month and a half ago. http://bigthink.com/ideas/38698

  2. It's a way to get in sync with family, friends and just plain nosy people. It teaches users to say what they have to say in a concise way. I think I might upgrade my phone so I can Twitter too! The Fail Whale smile is like a thumbs up to Twitter users!

  3. I love this idea of information coming to me instead of having to search for information. It is too cool that Twitter is and can be used for something other than social connections.

  4. Still not so sure about the Twitter thing. I am waiting for Kyle to convince me tomorrow. I am sure it is like my medication. I may not like it, but it's good for me, and I will make it a part of my day. That being said, I will most likely end up being a Twitter geek like Kyle. (Sorry, Kyle.) By the holidays, I bet I Tweet in my sleep. Rockin' Robin...Tweet, tweet, tweedily deet!

  5. Twitter is a thought-changing way of sharing concise information. The Fail Whale... presentation gave me a lot of ways that I probably hadn't thought about to use Twitter. I've already added some educational sites, some "fun" sites and a few friends I found- next I'm going to add some news sites. This facebook lover is in for a "moving the cheese" moment of change. The problem is tonight -- overload of Twitter!

  7. I'm so nervous!!! I have tried to avoid the Twitter bandwagon this whole time. I have tried to ignore all the hype and celebrities and randomness of the site. Buttt after these discussions and of course the link that is above...I believe it might be worth getting a Twitter account. I am still nervous about getting random tweets about things that are not important. I am excited to try TweetDeck and try to find some form of organization in the Twitter world. Guess I'm giving into this whole Twitter craze (atleast for a while.) :)

  9. The whale is smiling because he's like a fish out of water- which is how I feel - though surrounded by new supportive and encouraging friends- to try new things...Evidently he's just been tweeted about ways to levitate... If you're happy and you know it, tweet, tweet, tweet.....If you're not, you can tweet it, too.....Yep, this just might be fun. :)

  10. The Fail Whale is smiling because now a once unknown artist has become a social media icon. By making her art open content, Yiying Lu, will profit in more ways than had she made the design available for purchase.

The Fail Whale became an iconic image. It is a representaion of the power of community through social media. See the full story at: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_story_of_the_fail_whale.php

  11. Ok..so one of my best friends got me started on Twitter a few years ago...and I still do not get it. I even have synced it to my Facebook posts, but I get aggravated because it's only 140 characters. I just don't really get it. This could also be because I don't have that many friends I'm following or friends following me. But, I just don't really enjoy it. I also do not think it is very user friendly because I feel like it is very hard to find friends of mine who are on twitter. I like the idea of it and I love technology, but I am just currently not a twitter fan.

  12. Ok so I am a very private person who would never ever post what I'm doing online for anyone to see. I don't update my facebook status, and have never done twitter because I am just so private. BUT after becoming more educated about twitter, I can see how we could use it professionally which wouldn't interfere with my private life just my professional one. I like that you can go to teaching conferfences without actually going and quickly get ideas from other teachers without having to go hear them speak somewhere or calling them. This is my new outlook about twitter and I am excited to give it a chance.

  16. I am loving Twitter!!! I now know how it can be used as a PLN tool rather than just a social networking tool. Thanks Kyle!!!
I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea (until I read Becky's comment) why the fail whale is smiling.
