Day 2: Qualities of a Pinnacle Leader

As a Pinnacle Leader for Gaston County Schools, you exemplify teacher leadership and a love of lifelong learning. You are also a role model for technology integration, positive attitudes, and professionalism among your peers. It is important that you keep these qualities in mind as you get ready to embark upon a new year.

In the comments section, leave suggestions for how you can exhibit and keep these qualities throughout the year.

22 comments:

  1. Be willing to help other teachers throughout the year. Ask them if they need anything, offer times to meet so that they feel comfortable asking for help.

  2. I can exhibit these qualities throughout the year by, sharing with my peers and staff the resources I am using. Some of my staff are not aware of all the different resources available, so I think it is my job to use them on a consistent basis and encourage others to do the same. I was able to share several things that I used in my classroom last year, and I had several people ask me to come in and help them on a one-on-one basis and show them how to implement it into their classrooms.

  3. Patience is perhaps the greatest virtue, we, as Pinnacle Leaders, need. We will be asked many questions, many times. We will be asked the same questions, many times. Our job is to make sure everyone gets the answers he/she needs, no matter how long it takes. If we are willing to help, others will be willing to learn.

  4. It is so important to keep a positive attitude as a Pinnacle Leader, even in the past year I really felt like there were teachers who would come to me to help them with a digital tool or to help them create new ideas for their classrooms.

I also need to keep in mind that my classroom needs to be a model for technology integration, not just a senseless use of technology.

  5. Infuse your lessons with technology and do not be afraid to try new things.

Take what you know already works and engages your students and share with others around you.

Integrate technology not for the sake of using technology but to enhance your lessons and engagement of your students.

  6. I can exhibit and keep these Pinnacle qualities throughout the year by stepping up and helping where it is needed. Many times, especially due to budget cuts, we need people to step out of their comfort zone and assist wherever needed. I plan to do this to help out my school and the staff. Also, being willing to answer questions and assist other staff members with technology can be a huge help. We only have one media specialist and she cannot do everything. Therefore, it is important to be a person that is accessible and friendly when it comes to the technological needs of the staff.

  7. To stay on the balcony. You are a leader so you should act like a leader. Keep your positive attitude even if it is fake. Role models are meant to be positive people and we were chosen for a reason. Someone put faith in us to be leaders and to stay positive for a reason.

  8. You can offer to help other teachers that you know may be struggling with technology. You could also offer ways to show others how they can integrate technology into what they are already doing. Have an open door policy and invite other teachers to observe your classroom to get ideas on how they can use technology.

  9. These qualities can be exhibited through out the year by always helping others with any and all technological issues they may have. A Pinnacle Leader should always be willing and ready to help out with any technology problem or new idea that is presented to them. As a Pinnacle Leader, you should also always be looking for and using the newest technology available.

  10. I must admit this is a work in progress for me. I expect teachers to do what is best practice for student learning. This leads me to some frustration with adults. I try to remember to put myself in their place and say and do what I would like others to do for me.

  11. With all the new changes that are affecting education it is important to be up to date on the latest research. Teacher leaders should be constantly learning. I also think that having a positive attitude goes a long way. With change their can be resistance. As a leader, you should be accepting of change and keep negative comments to a minimal. As the new school year is approaching I am excited to think about using technology to enhance lessons, rather than doing technology lessons.

  12. Teacher Leadership: assume leadership roles in or participate in school groups and committees such as SIT, SSMT, etc. Lead by example and by doing the right thing.

Lifelong Learning: participate in professional development opportunities, read professional materials, discuss new ideas with colleagues, implement new techniques in your classroom.

Technology Integration: incorporate Web 2.0 applications and other technologies as tools for engaging students in learning; remember that technology is the means to the end, not the end itself.

Positive Attitude: as hard as it can be sometimes, remember why you started teaching and what made you passionate about it; do things to reawaken that passion. Be friendly and courteous to everyone, even people you don't like. Smile.

Professionalism: Dress and act professionally. Choose words thoughtfully in interactions with peers, students, and parents.

  14. Reinforce what we have learned from our weeks at Pinnacle training with our colleagues. When someone has a question or needs help, don't be negative to what they are asking and direct them to where they need to go, if we can't help them. Continue to ask questions ourselves because we all still have something we can learn as well. Lastly, turn the negative comments around by telling the other person that we are here for the students, so we need to teach to their needs.

  15. Offer to co-teach a lesson that integrates technology. Always smile, even if you're having a bad day, it will put you in a better mood. Always be conservative when dressing and set a good example. Support your team and other peers and be ready to help!

  16. Sooo....you have all these great stations ready to go and for whatever reason your technology isn't working....Make sure a contingency plan is ready to go!
Remembering: Given a bowl of candy, make a list of those with chocolate as an ingredient.
    Understanding: Sort candy by attribute/explain.
Applying: Select 5 candies & survey peers on their favorite; illustrate results on a graph; explain process.
Analysing: On a poster, compare and contrast 2 favorite candies with a partner using a venn diagram.
Evaluating: Create a rubric to determine which candy has the best flavor - on paper. :)
Creating: Create a new candy, complete with slogan/song - choose your media. (Loved your idea!)
To incorporate the idea of PLAY, perhaps you could use toys/balls/playdough. Though the chocolate made for great stations, and was definitely enjoyed and appreciated! :)

  22. As a Pinnacle Leader, we have many expectations. Other than assisting others with their technology issues, we need to be going above and beyond in using 21st century technology skills with our students. We need to lead by example in our schools and be willing to share what we've learned this summer.
